At the Cabo Girao skywalk.

Cabo Girao, on the island of Madeira is one of the highest sea cliffs in the world. And for the past 3 years it has also had a glass bottomed skywalk, where you can look 580 meters down and it is free to enter.

Right after the little charming fishing village of Camara de Lobos, you have a very high sea cliff rising up. It’s called Cabo Girao. Madeira is in general a very steep island that rises from the sea almost vertically and goes up to 1861 meters above sea level in just a few kilometers. At Cabo Girao you have the most drastic elevation to the sea, with a cliff dropping 580 meters down to the ocean. That gives you some really spectacular views if you go up there. Or if you look at the cliff from a distance.

And there is a skywalk at Cabo Girao.

A little over two years ago, a skywalk was build.

From there you have a glass floor you can look right through. Giving the already fantastic view a whole new dimension. The skywalk is fairly small. So try to get there at times when you have few tourists, as the cliff is visited by an average of 1800 people per day. Best thing is to visit there before 9am in the morning, as the tour busses start to arrive at around 09:15. The alternative is to come late in the afternoon, where you tend to have just a few visitors. But try to avoid going there between 09:30 and 11:30 in the morning, as it is often very crowded during that period.

And the skywalk is free.

Unlike most other skywalks in this world, the skywalk here is free to walk on. It might be fairly small, but at least you are not paying a fortune to walk on it. The only thing you pay to use is the public toilet, which will cost you 0,50€ to use.

So enjoy the view for free and go to the toilet later 🙂
