The train journey from Zagreb to Split is a scenic journey.

I Just took the train from Zagreb to Split and I would highly recommend the train, if you are planning to travel that route. It’s a very scenic journey in a nice modern train.

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and Split is one of the most popular towns on the Croatian coast. Lot’s of people travel the route between these two cities, including me. I personally think that the train journey is really spectacular and I would like to put in my 5 cents for it.

Nice modern train.

The train traveling from Zagreb to Split runs two times a day and once at night at the moment. I normally like night train journeys a lot, but in this case I would recommend the day journey. The scenery on the journey is very nice and it gives you some fantastic views of the Croatian countryside. The train between Zagreb and Split goes through some  very sparsely populated areas, that you are not likely to see, unless you travel by train.

And I was not the only one on the train who really enjoyed the journey. There was an elderly Croatian man sitting in front of me. He spend about half the journey with one big smile on his face, while he was enjoying the scenery. And the other half wiping tears from his eyes, cause he clearly enjoyed the journey so much.

The train itself is a modern train that travels at fairly high speed. But not so fast that you lose the good view. There is no restaurant car on the train. but you are welcome to bring your own food and drink onboard. On my journey last week, I went to a local supermarket and picked up two bottles of Croatian microbrew beer that made a good journey even nicer for me.

So if you are traveling on this scenic route, then take the train if you can. It’s more comfortable. It’s better for the environment. And it’s the most scenic way to travel between Zagreb and split as well.

  1. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am thinking of doing this journey this autumn. I found traveling on the bus last year from Zagreb to Zadar to cramped space wise. On the train one can stretch and have more elbow space. Do you get a reserved seat number? I want to travel in a chair going forward for 6 hours🤫

    • Hi’ Hilda. From what I remember there were no reserved seats on the train. The train was not full at all and I was moving a little around between the seats, depending on where the view was the best, so I think you should be able to do the same.

thank you for mentioning this train. I hope it will continue to operate so the more people use it the better. I always travel at night as I continue to Wien and thats the connection , so I miss out on the landscape. BUT I plan to go to some intermediate stop , take my bike with me and ride back . The night train is also the only one taking bikes.
I currently live on the island of Hvar , so Split is my gateway.
    all the best,
    Herbert

  3. Wow, your travel pictures are so nice! Make me so excited now. I totally love Croatia.
