After a few months of looking at other people using the selfie stick and after meeting a guy who was very creative with his selfie stick, I decided to get one 3 months ago. It has been a fun ride so far. Just remember to think a little on how to use it. And not to use it.

Most people in real life like your selfie stick.

One thing one can fear when you have a selfie stick is that other people might get angry at you for having it. Especially when you look at how unpopular it is on social media. I always see dozens of people hating the thing. But when I am out in real life then I find that people are very curious about it. And they usually want to have their photo taken with it. They will often photograph me using it as well. I am careful not to be standing and blocking peoples way with my selfie stick. Cause then you can quickly be annoying. But I will get to that later when I talk selfie stick etiquette.

Don’t just do the average selfie photos with the stick.

I do not have a selfie stick cause I want to take photos of myself in front of famous landmarks. I might take one from time to time. But my main purpose is that I can get some cool angles that I would otherwise not be able to get. Try to put it up high so that you get photographed from above. Or put it on the ground. Or behind your foot soles. And then you will see that you get some new funny and creative angles for your photos.

When people tell me that I can just get someone else to take the photo instead of using the stick, then it only shows to me that they are never ever thinking about creative photo angles. Because when you hand most people a camera and ask them to take a photo of you and try to explain them how you want it taken. Then you can be pretty damn sure that they will not take it the way you want it. Because they do not think of a photo as something that differs greatly all depending on what angle the photo is taken from. So get yourself a selfie stick if you have a creative photo mind.

Use it when you normally wouldn’t take a photo.

Use the selfie stick when you are taking a bath. Taking a dump. Drying your socks. It’s these situations where you can often create some funny photos. As long as you are not afraid to look a little silly and laugh at yourself.

Is it the wand of narcissus?

There is a narcissistic thing to the selfie stick for sure. But I think this can be turned in to something funny too. As long as you are not using it to take 10 new profile photos a day for your facebook profile, so that everyone can tell you that you are pretty. Hell, I am never gonna get that myself anyway. I’m a 45 year old chubby guy and I still love my selfie stick. Because I don’t mind to be goofy with it and make a fool out of myself. And in these times we live in: People they do like when a story is personal. And a story will always be more personal if there is a photo of the person who is the center of the story. Bear in mind that I am again NOT talking about “me in front of everything I wrote about”. But more a way to put a little humor in to a story, while you actually show your blog readers who the writer is.

And can we have some selfie stick etiquette please.

One of the main reasons why the stick is unpopular in some places is that people are blocking the way with the stick. And in some cases hitting people in the head with it. So don’t take it when there is half a million people around you, unless you can use it in a way so it does not become a pain. A hand held selfie photo without using the stick will do just fine if you are at a concert for instance. So there is no reason to use the stick unless you actually have something creative in mind. Even if I have the stick, I also do some handheld selfies. Because the situation is not always for using the stick. If you just want a photo of yourself in front of let’s say the Eiffel Tower and the place is crowded. Then ask someone to take a photo of you. You don’t want to smack 6 old tourists in the face with your stick. And if you want some photos in places that are crowded, then go there very early or very late, when there are very few or no people there. I wanted to take a selfie photo recently on a glass platform on top of a cliff on Madeira island. But that place is often very crowded. So I went during the time when there are hardly any visitors. And I got a couple of photos there. Even if I was bloody scared of lying on my back on a piece of glass with 580 meter free fall underneath. So let us have some selfie stick etiquette please.

I love my selfie stick and I will keep using it.

As you can maybe see, I really love my little stick for certain type of photos. And I would like to remind you one other VERY VERY important thing: With a selfie stick you might also be able to annoy some old farts who spend their entire life sitting on Facebook, telling the world what they hate and what they are upset with. 🙂

Screw you haters :-)

And bonus info:

I also have a vuvuzela to annoy old farts with while I am having fun 🙂

I love that phrase The Wand of Narcissus. I will have to keep that for future use. I love my selfie stick also. It’s fun and that’s what life is all about.

  2. I can’t wait to purchase my selfie stick 🙂

  3. My wife has hated the whole selfie thing, but that has changed lately. Now to bring on the ‘selfie’ stick.

  4. I am anti-selfie stick but love the dentist shot.

  5. I bought one last year to do video intros. My kids were holding the camera on an angle and the videos were horrible.

    • Alejandra from http://www.laleswanderlust.com does some good selfie stick videos in my opnion, that you might wanna check out.
But a selfie stick photo or a selfie stick video will always be their own type and you gotta like that if you want to use it. And if you ask me then letting kids do filming will hardly ever work, cause they will often not be able to hold the camera still.
