Heartland Festival at Egeskov Castle.

Heartland Festival at Egeskov Castle.

In southern Denmark there is a music festival called Heartland. It’s situated right by a medieval castle. On top of having great music, it also has talks with world famous people and gourmet food instead of the usual lousy fastfood that you get at most music festivals. I just went to Heartland Festival and I loved it.

I have been going to music festivals since I was a teen. It’s really cool to spend 3-4 days where all you do is listen to live music, drink beer and hang out with cool people. I grew up in Denmark, where we have many of these festivals that takes place over several days.

And I still go to these festivals. But for the past two years there has been a new festival that is a little different. Most importantly it tries to aim for high quality in all aspects. This means that the food being sold there is not your average fastfood, but gourmet food, coming from very good restaurants. Some of them with Michelin stars. They also have wine bars with fresh oysters, stalls selling fine spirits aged in oak barrels and places that only sells handcrafted beer. They also have workshops with world famous chefs at Heartland.

And the setting is in the garden of a medieval castle. The castle is called Egeskov and is actually build on stilts in a little lake. It’s already an attraction in itself and receives thousands of tourists a year. But during the festival, the place turns in to a big garden party.

This was my first visit to the festival and I have to say that this is my new favourite festival in Denmark. I have reached an age (47), where I really like to drink quality beer and listen to music, while eating gourmet food when I am hungry. And I can afford to pay a little extra for things compared to when I was younger. When looking at the people who attend the festival you can also see that there are many who are a little older than at most other rock festival around the world. And the older folks tend to be fairly well educated.

The festival is not that big and that gives it a relaxed atmosphere. I loved how Michael Stipe was sitting next to me drinking coffee one morning, without having a crowd bothering him. Michael Stipe was not there to sing by the way. He was there doing a talk about ”On the Meaning of Ego in 2017” together with Douglas Coupland.

As you might have figured out, I really liked this place. Screw it that it costs a little extra. I go to less music festivals these days anyway, so when I go, I like to go to the best. And the Heartland Festival at Egeskov Castle is exactly that.

Hi man! Loved this post. Could you please help me? What is the budget (in average) for this festival? Thanks man! Cheers!

    • Hi’ Emanuel. You have some info in English on this link concerning tickets and accommodation for the festival. What you spend in the end depends a lot on how much you like to drink when you are at a festval.http: //www.heartlandfestival.dk/tickets/
