This morning I just started a 6 week journey by bicycle through Mexico. I’m not in a hurry and not out to set any speed records. Exploring Mexico and meeting Mexicans while cycling slowly around the country is my goal.
I just spent a few days in the Mexican town Tapachula. Finding a suitable touring bicycle was my goal. After looking around malls and bicycle shops, I finally found the right place. A tiny little repair shop, where the local bicycle enthusiasts are meeting in Tapachula. After talking a bit to the guys, one of them told me that he had a good second hand Trek mountain bike for sale. I had a look at it and it was in very good condition. The guys at the repair shop spent an hour going through the bike, to make sure it was all ok and then I bought it. Very nice guys at the bicycle repair shop and a very nice guy who sold me the bike. Should you ever be in Tapachula on a bicycle journey, then Unibike is a good place to meet local cyclists.
I have already been to Mexico several times and really like the country. So my journey is not about seeing the biggest sights. It’s more about getting to know a country deeper. And I love cycling as a way to travel. It’s healthy, it’s great mental therapy and it makes me travel at a nice slow pace. Something I am not doing when I work as a tour guide. My job can often be very stressful, so when I am not working, then I try to take it slow. This is why I am slow biking through Mexico this summer.
What parts of Mexico will I be slow cycling?
I started my trip this morning in Tapachula in the very south of Mexico. My plan is to bike north up through Chiapas and end up in Puerto Escondido after some days of biking. How many I do not know. I do not want to make any set plans or set any distance for the day. For me it’s important that I can just cycle the amount of kilometers I feel like every day and when I think it’s enough for today, then I will stop and find a hotel. Slow cycling it is, this summer.
After slow cycling the coast of Chiapas, I plan to head to Mexico City for a few days. Then I plan to cycle around another part of Mexico that I have not decided yet. I will sometimes put my bike on the bus to move from one part of the country to another. I do not just want to cycle one part of Mexico this time. And remember that Mexico is a huge country that you do not just cycle all around in a few weeks.
Looking forward to following you on this journey
Have a great trip!
Hi Claus, some friends and I are planning on touring in Mexico this summer. Thanks for the advice at either end of your trip! We plan to start in Oaxaca — wondering if you have any advice on how easily we’ll be able to rent or buy a bike or whether we should try to bring our own? Thank you!
Hi’ Luke. Oaxaca actually has a pretty good scene regarding bicycle shops. I have bought some equipment and bicycle jerseys there and really liked the shops. One guy that i have bought from is a former Mexican professional cyclist called Pedro Martinez. he has a good bike shop in the center of Oaxaca. Check out his website and see if this is what you are looking for: http://www.bicicletaspedromartinez.com/
