Visiting San Luis Potosi.

Visiting San Luis Potosi.

I have just spend a few days in San Luis Potosi and this is why it’s one of my favourite places in Mexico. And the place has some great local beers too and some nice bars serving them.

On my bicycle trip through Mexico I have just passed through San Luis Potosi. It actually turned in to a little more than just passing through. Because I liked this city so much, that I decided to stay there for a few days.

San Luis Potosi is pretty, but not too overrun with tourists.

When visiting San Luis Potosi, it’s first of all striking how pretty the old city center is. It’s also protected by UNESCO. Always a good thing when a place is that. As they do not just get money to keep it nice, but are also under some strict rules, not allowing big ugly constructions in the middle of the whole thing. Mexico has a lot of these pretty old historical towns though. And because San Luis Potosi is not that close to any of the big airports in Mexico, the mass tourism is kept down. It’s actually mainly Mexican tourists who come here.

Lot’s of parks and squares.

San Luis Potosi has a lot of parks and squares within the city. That gives the city a nice airy vibe. It’s just the kinda city that you like to stroll around by foot. As in most of Mexico, the municipality is good at putting up park benches and the locals are good at using them. Strolling through a park or across one of the many squares, is one of the best ways to absorb the local vibe. The squares in San Luis Potosi are alive both during daytime and evening with locals of all ages.

Good bars and good beers in San Luis Potosi.

I am a beer lover. Whenever I visit a new destination I always check if there is a scene for good local beer. I’m not at all in to big beer brands. The world can have Heineken, Corona, Stella and Carlsberg to themselves. But San Luis Potosi has a couple of nice small breweries. And some local bars that serve these beers.

One bar that I really liked was a place called La Oruga y La Cebada. This is a bar right in the old city center. It has two floors and sometimes have live music. It has a good mix of middle aged beer geeks like me and young local students who keep the place lively. They have several beers on tap from the local brewery Legendaria. I in particular like the “2 de abril pale ale”. Absolutely brilliant hoppy beer and probably my favourite beer in all Mexico.

I also went to another place called Fieles Difuntos. They actually brew their own beer in the building. So this is really a brew pub. They have a really nice rustic look that I liked a lot. I was there on a Tuesday though and this is clearly a weekend place. Mainly because it’s in a quiet street a little outside the center. But people there told me that it’s very lively with local live bands during weekends. So I will just have to return there again soon. Their beer was nice too by the way.

So this was a little bit about why I liked visiting San Luis Potosi. I can only recommend that you guys visit too if you are in Mexico. It’s really a joy of a city to be in and I could easily live there.
